Approach

My Approach

My Philosophy:

I believe that within the core of most human beings is the ability to self-correct. The ingredients are there; however, one must “tap” into them. Often this is not happening for a myriad of reasons. One primary reason is that a person cannot find a safe environment in which to process. Counseling provides a safe and confidential environment within which a client can view self as well as his/her world more accurately. The role of the counselor is to support the client as he/she makes corrections which result in more satisfaction with life.

My Therapy Model:

My PhD is in Marriage and Family Therapy which means that I am a “systems” trained therapist. What does that mean? It means that I understand that you do not exist in a vacuum. You are tied by invisible strings to others within systems (family systems, friendship systems, work systems, etc). Therefore, what you do/don’t do affects them and what they do/don’t do affects you. Even if you come to my office alone, in my mind I am building your work systems as you talk to me about your life. Your systems have to be considered as we discuss the changes that you want to make in your life in order to have more personal growth.

Confidentiality:

Confidentiality is crucial to the therapeutic relationship. In all but a few rare situations, your confidentiality (that is, your privacy) is protected by state law and by the rules of the profession. The most common areas in which confidentiality is NOT protected concern abuse or neglect of a minor (child), an elderly person, or a disabled person. There are a few other areas which are thoroughly explained in the documents you receive as we begin to work together.

Testimonials

Mike Ferraro, LPC Intern, LCDC, LMFT-A

“Dr. Dunn has been my counseling Supervisor for two years. During that time she has taught me what it takes to become a good therapist. She is smart, insightful, kind and always helpful. She has always treated me with warmth and respect while having a good sense of humor. Her techniques, experience and judgement have helped me immeasurably in my own practice. I highly recommend her as a Supervisor and also to clients as a terrific therapist.”

Elise Thompson, Marriage & Family Therapist, LMFT

“I highly esteem Dr. Jan Dunn as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who I have known for over 20 years. She has a remarkable way of expertly utilizing her training and many years of experience for the benefit of her clients and their relationships. By providing a safe and encouraging environment while respectfully challenging a resistance to change, Jan sets the stage for optimal growth. An opportunity to work with Dr. Jan Dunn is a great investment that will influence your life for the better!”

Debbie Tudor, LPC-S

“Dr. Dunn is a caring, compassionate therapist who expresses true concern and holds high standards in the care of her clients. She works diligently to provide a professional, positive environment that makes the client sure of their safety and comfort.”

Felicia Stefanow, Former Receptionist

“I met Jan Dunn working at her office space as her front desk receptionist. One of the best qualities about Dr. Dunn is she is very personable and is eager to help in any way possible. Her clients have spoken to me multiple times about how great she is and how much she does for them. She continues to be on time for her clients and makes sure she goes above and beyond to assist them in anyways. Jan is a kind soul and she is always looking to find ways to make others feel great. Even though I never saw Dr. Dunn for therapy I know she takes great care for the people she works with 100% of the time.”

Morgan Kirscht, Former Office Center Manager

“Jan is not only a wonderful therapist but a wonderful person. Her clients enjoy coming to see her and you can tell that Dr. Dunn genuinely cares about each of her clients. She is professional, courteous, and confidential when it comes to her clients and ensures every client gets the care they need.”
